Linux Slice/VPS

I’ve been using Magento for around a year now. The biggest issue with it though is speed and performance. So, to fix this, I’ve been playing around with a slice (basically a VPS - Virtual Private Server). With slicehost, you can screw around with the configuration and if you mess it up, you just do a restore that only take about 5 min. It’s really awesome.

When’s the Last Time?

Anymore, it seems you hear a lot on the news complaining about our government? You talk to your neighbor, people at parties, meetings, or associates and everyone is complaining about the government. They don’t like what the president did, they don’t like what a judge ruled, they don’t like what their senator or representative voted for or against.

I strongly believe that this is part of our freedom, however, how many actually call their senator or representative? How many of you vote - even if you think your vote won’t count, it starts with one.

How many of these people called their representative or senator about the bailout bill? I did. My point I guess is that if you don’t vote, and you don’t call your senator or representatives, you don’t express your opinions, then you really are just a whiner and nothing more. It you have an opinion, tell them. If you don’t like them, vote against them - then you have room to talk.

So, when is the last time you called your senator, representative, or president? When is the last time you voted your beliefs?

I Love My iPhone

As the title says, I love my iPhone. In fact I’m blogging from it now. I’m laying here on my bed listening to Daniel Powter’s “You Had a Bad Day.” Actislly I had a great day - I just love that song and like to listen to it at the end of a successful day. My son and I went and saw a movie this evening - he loves going out.

I’m wiping my laptop computer clean - I’ve been meaning to do it for a while - it’s just hard to do without it. I usually like to while my computer clean and reinstall every 6 months or so.

Looking forward to California even though it’s work - it’s nice to have a change.

I’m deadly aposed to this “bailout” - bad bad bad bad bad bad idea.

Safari - First Full Pass of Acid3

Well, this is certainly some exciting news. As a web developer I love to see someone getting close to the set standards. Safari has a perfect 100 now (Thank you Apple!) with Internet Explorer having a not so perfect 14. But that’s to be expected from Micr$oft.

It’s so aggravating when you develop a site and it works in every browser, Opera, Safari, FireFox, Sea Monkey, and all the others including some of Internet Explorer - but there is just one version of Internet Explorer that it does not work in.

99.9999% of the time this is not the web developer’s problem, but another case of Micro$oft’s sloppy programing and their general “I don’t care about standards if we didn’t set them” attitude.

The “bailout”

I take big issue with the proposed “bailout” that has been proposed for these huge companies. I read somewhere that it is approximately $2,500 per person! Think about that! If we are going to take billions of tax payers dollars and pump it back into the economy - who in their right mind would say, “let’s give it to the CEO’s and the big companies that have been living high on the hog.”? If we really wanted to help the economy, how about, we stop charging people enormous taxes, and how about we give that $2,500 to each person! I’d love to have that money to help my business stay afloat right now!

The whole concept of these huge corporations in my opinion is just wrong. I think it’s a mistake for the public to allow them. I think we need to go back to small private owned or LLCs where CEOs are paid much less a year and actually have to work for it. You think about it - these big corporations DON’T help our economy - they hurt it. Putting the money back into the hands of small businesses is the best way to save our economy.

So AIG and others will go under! BIG DEAL! Who will lose money? Only the huge investors. It’s a risk THEY took - not one we (the little guy) took. I’m sure State Farm, Progressive, and others would be happy to take AIG’s customers. That’s what happens when a company goes under from bad business practices.

Then take the banks. Would it be so bad to have small home-town banks again? To return our money to our communities instead of huge banks?

New Google / t-mobile Phone

The first Google Android phone was announced today with t-mobile. There have been many attempts to come up with a cell phone that rivals the iPhone. Spint has one (Who would ever use Sprint?), Verizon has one (Their network really is the best) and even ATT has other phones. But so far no one has even come close. However, I think the new Google/t-moble G1 comes the closest any phone has to rivaling the iPhone. It’s the only one that has the features. The only one that has ability to have applications. That’s what I like, the fact it is open source. I think that eventually, there will be an Android phone that rivals the iPhone, but just not yet - close though. I will admit it has tempted me to switch to t-mobile as they have recently come into my market. more info at: http://www.t-mobileg1.com
